With thousands of residential and commercial installations under their belt in Long Port, Sea Isle City, Margate City, and Ocean City, Lenegan Plumbing & Heating LLC knows a thing or two when it comes water heaters. To help understand the difference between a traditional water heater and a tankless water heater we’ve divided them up into three categories: cost, efficiency, and installation and maintenance.
The cost advantages depend on whether you want a quick fix or a long-term investment:
Tankless: costs slightly more up front, but can save you substantially on your monthly bills. (We’ll explain why when we talk about efficiency).
Traditional: costs less up front, but are expensive because they’re constantly running to heat your water. The average life expectancy of a traditional water heater is 10 years, so replacing it can be costly too.
This is an important one: How well does each water heater work?
Tankless: Is a smaller system that flash-heats water on demand, and turns off as soon when you’re done using it. Tankless heaters are designed to save energy, and continuously provide hot water.
Traditional: Like we mentioned before, a tank water heater is always running- even when you’re sleeping. The system is large and pre-heats a limited amount of water in the tank through pipes coiled up inside. If you use up all the hot water, it takes time for it to refill and reheat again. You can get bigger tanks, but they’re expensive and there’s still a limit.
3. Installation & Maintenance
Installation costs vary for each type of water heater.
Tankless: They last up to 20 years with very little maintenance.
Traditional: Most tanks last only 10-12 years before they have to be replaced, and typically come with just a 6-year warranty.
