Your AC Unit Broke! Now What Do You Do?

Ocean City, New Jersey has a lot of things to do in the Summer like the beach and boardwalk, but when the fun is done the last thing you want to be worrying about when you come home is a broken air conditioning unit. We here at Lenegan Plumbing & Heating LLC would like to give you a few pointers on how to prevent a problem like this from happening, and what to do if it ultimately does happen.

Before giving us a call, here are some signs to check for that your HVAC Unit isn’t working:

  1. It is no longer blowing out cold air.
  2. Unusual noises coming from the equipment.
  3. The temperature in your house is rising.

Also, make sure you’ve checked your electrical breakers and the batteries in your thermostat. If that’s not the case, and you find yourself with a broken unit, we here at Lenegan Plumbing & Heating LLC have a 24-hour emergency service available. However, if we are unable to get to you immediately here are some tips to keep your home cool:

  1. Use fans – Although a fan does not actually cool the air, it will create wind and help circulate the air. Be sure to have your fans rotating counter clockwise.
  2. Avoid using ovens –  Don’t add more heat into an already warm space by using your oven, range, or even your dishwasher. Each of those appliances releases more heat into your home.
  3. Block the sun – Keep blinds and curtains closed to block heat generated by the sun. In the evening, open your windows and use fans to bring cooler air inside of your home.
  4. Visit somewhere with air conditioning – The Ocean City Aquatic Center is a great place to bring the family, Lucy the Elephant in Margate is a nearby landmark to see, and taking everyone to see a movie in Harbor Square Theater in Stone Harbor is also another activity that can be done at night too.

In most cases, this can all be prevented by getting your HVAC Unit serviced at least twice a year, once in the Spring to ensure you are ready for the summer season and once in the Fall to make certain that your heating system is safe to operate and to get maximum performance out of you equipment.

Getting a preventative maintenance tune-up can save you form having to make costly emergency repairs, and keep you stress-free when the temperatures get extreme. To check out our service contract and the benefits of getting a professional to and check-out your equipment, click here.
